Best practice livestock Transport Hub launched by MLA

Meat & Livestock Australia has launched a Transport Hub – a central location for information and resources on transporting cattle, sheep and goats by road in Australia.

The hub follows extensive consultation in 2023 at transport industry events and brings together information specifically focused on best practice preparation of livestock through Australia’s red meat supply chain.
Information includes relevant standards and guidelines, rules and regulations and there is a focus on presenting animals fit to load for their intended journey.

The Transport Hub is a work in progress; next steps involve the development of further extension and adoption resources to increase uptake of best practice preparation for livestock transport.

MLA welcomes feedback and suggestions which can be sent via email to transporthub@mla.com.au

Executive Director Update

Welcome everyone to the weekly news,

The escalating drought conditions gripping the southern half of Australia are becoming impossible to ignore. From South Australia through Victoria and into southern and central New South Wales, dry paddocks are a stark reminder of the challenges facing our rural communities.

As feed reserves dwindle and the land continues to dry, the critical role of rural transporters in keeping the wheels of agriculture turning has never been clearer.

In drought-affected regions, there’s been a sharp rise in the movement of fodder and grain to support farmers doing everything they can to hold onto breeding stock and keep operations going. At the same time, we’re seeing significant livestock movements northward, as producers seek relief for their animals. Northern and central NSW, along with southern and central Queensland, are receiving large numbers of cattle and sheep.

Wagga Wagga has become a focal point in recent weeks, with cattle sales topping nearly 10,000 head each week, and a remarkable 88,000 sheep and lambs yarded just two weeks ago. These figures highlight not just the scale of the challenge, but the resilience of our producers making incredibly tough decisions in tough conditions.

This surge in freight demand is putting immense pressure on our members and drivers. Long hours, challenging road conditions, and high workloads have become the norm — all in the name of supporting farmers when they need it most. A huge shout out to our members and their staff who continue to fly the flag. Your efforts have not gone unnoticed, with rural media spotlighting your contribution this week.

But beyond the numbers and logistics, it’s important to acknowledge the emotional toll. The burden on farmers and their families is immense. Financial pressure, exhaustion, and uncertainty weigh heavily. Now more than ever, we need to show compassion, check in on those doing it tough, and encourage them to access the many support networks available. Our industry is about more than trucks and freight — it’s about people and communities. We all have a role to play in looking out for one another.

On a brighter note, the Brisbane Truck Show is lighting up the industry this week — offering a welcome break and a chance to reconnect. It’s not just about chrome and horsepower; it’s about sharing stories, catching up with mates, and celebrating our community. If you're heading to Brisbane, make sure to visit our National Sponsors — they are the backbone of our Association and play a vital role in helping us support the industry.

Let’s make the most of this opportunity to come together, have a laugh, and remind ourselves that even in hard times, our industry spirit is alive and well.

Until next week, stay safe.

Anthony
Together, we are stronger.
